3 Ways to Make Your Pet’s Move Stress-Free

You know why the boxes are piling up. Your pet just knows their favorite spot on the couch has disappeared.

Moving brings new sounds, unfamiliar people, and changes to everyday routines. While you can’t eliminate every worry, a little preparation can help your dog or cat feel more comfortable before, during, and after moving day.

At Razorback Moving & Storage, we want you to have time to focus on everyone making the move—including your four-legged family members. Here are three practical ways to make their transition easier.

1. Prepare Your Pet Before Moving Day

Start introducing boxes and packing supplies gradually. Keep meals, walks, and playtime close to their usual schedule, and leave a familiar resting spot available while you pack.

If your pet will travel in a carrier, give them time to get comfortable with it before the trip. Short practice sessions are easier to fit into your schedule now than on moving morning.

Check that their ID tag and microchip registration have your current contact information. If your pet struggles with travel anxiety or motion sickness, speak with your veterinarian ahead of time. For an overnight journey, confirm your hotel’s pet policy before booking.

Pack a separate pet bag that stays with you:

  • Their regular food, water, and bowls
  • A leash, harness, and waste bags
  • Litter and a litter box for cats
  • Any prescribed medication and veterinary records
  • A familiar blanket or favorite toy

Label this bag clearly so it doesn’t get loaded with the household boxes. You’ll want those supplies within reach during the trip and your first evening.

2. Give Your Pet a Quiet Place During the Move

With doors opening and furniture moving through hallways, pets need a secure space away from the activity. Use a quiet room with the door closed, or arrange for them to stay with someone they know while loading takes place.

Tell your moving crew which room your pet is using, and place a note on the door asking everyone to keep it closed. Choose one household member to handle feeding, bathroom breaks, and the trip to your new home.

For the drive, use an appropriately secured carrier or a properly fitted vehicle harness. Pets should never ride in the cargo compartment of a moving truck. Never leave them unattended in a parked car; temperatures can become dangerous even when the weather seems mild.

3. Help Them Settle In Gradually

Before letting your pet explore, check the new home for accessible electrical cords, toxic plants, and unsecured windows. Set up one quiet room with familiar bedding, water, and their usual supplies.

Let them explore additional rooms gradually as they become comfortable. Continue their familiar routine and give them time to adjust.

You don’t have to unpack every box on the first night. Put your pet’s essentials near the top of your unpacking list, alongside your own overnight necessities. Having their belongings ready gives you one less task to manage after a busy day.
